Baseball:

(January – June): Our Abyssinian Crusaders baseball program provides our youth players with skills to be creative, quick, and dependable to their team after learning the fundamentals of baseball. Our mission at Youth on the Move is to teach our youth participants how to make the smartest play while maximizing their output efficiently. Our goal is to develop big league citizens, not big-league players. Our program consists of one team of 15 players with regular practices twice a week for 3 hours each time. We hold our practices once during the week and once on weekends. We section off our participants depending on age, which enables our children to play against children of similar age and skill ability. Last year our baseball Rookie Division team( 7–8-year-old) played an average of 1-2 games per week, which was best suitable for them. This year, our team advanced as far as the Triple-A division for 9–10-year-olds, playing two games per week.

Overall, our baseball program is the perfect fit. We prioritize the safety and health of our participants. We guarantee a safe space to enjoy the sport of baseball while instilling the values a child needs for their development, as supported by our mission statement.

(year-round): Youth on the Move aims to give young people the opportunity to engage in physical activity through basketball on a recreational level. We allow our youth participants of all ages to learn fundamental skills through the sport of basketball while involving the local community. Here at Youth on the Move, participants have a space to indulge and feel a sense of community while participating in a sport that they can enjoy. Our basketball program consists of four teams broken down by the following age groups: 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, and 16+. Each team meets 8 hours each week: twice a week for 2 hours and 4 hours on the weekend.

Our basketball programs have worked persistently to earn their place in the legacy of winning in the Harlem community. Our basketball teams compete in various local tournaments in Harlem and the Bronx area. In addition, we also travel to out-of-state tournaments, so our athletes can get exposure and overall basketball experience. We try our best to showcase our athlete's talents and put them in the best standings for their future.

Our Skills and Drills Basketball Program fosters a healthy sense of self and community for our participants through the discipline of basketball. Our goal is to enhance our participant's confidence and overall lives by providing a fitness experience in a welcoming, non-intimidating environment. We accept youth participants between 8 and 12 years of age. Our goal is to create a welcoming, non-intimidating environment where all kids can feel they belong. We hold our camp on Saturdays, from 9 am -11 pm, as we instruct our youth participants on the fundamentals of basketball. We aim to give our participants an experience that impacts their lives while fostering the values of confidence, discipline, respect, enthusiasm, accountability, community building, creativity, and commitment.

Football

(March - December): Our Crusaders football team prides itself on teaching our players that availability is the best ability for football players. Here at Youth on the Move, we provide the training necessary to work with all players, focusing heavily on different stances and disciplines in the football department. Our goal is to execute at a high level while ensuring our players are well-conditioned. We teach our participants the importance of reaction time, stances, and overall efficiency while on the field. Our football program consists of four teams broken down by the following age groups: 8-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-16. The teams meet 8 hours per week: 2 hours twice throughout the week and 4 hours on the weekend.

Karate

In addition to team sports, YOTM offers a karate program. This year, we had an average attendance of twelve participants that met three days out of the week for two hours. In karate, students learn fundamental skills as it relates to the sport. Throughout the classes, students have the opportunity to advance in skills and go from beginner stages (white belt) to more advanced stages (black belt).

In addition, our karate classes also require a monetary fee. The fee ranges from $100 to $300 based on financial capabilities. That monetary fee will cover instructor expenses, equipment expenses, belts, and individual commitment that holds individuals accountable.

STUDY BUDDY

Our Study Buddy program provides essential homework assistance to increase homework completion and decrease nightly family frustrations that result from trying to meet the challenges of common-core-related assignments. At Youth on the Move, we offer tutoring services for any student that needs assistance (homework, project completion, tutoring, enrichment). The intergenerational relationship is beneficial for both the tutor and the tutee because it provides a forum for them to communicate in a common language that makes them feel comfortable. Our program also removes the feelings of stress associated with being in school, while school can negatively impact student performance.

Summer Program

As recent years have shown, the Youth on the Move summer program has been beneficial for our youth participants. YOTM summer camp has filled a crucial void for our young people during the summer months. It has given youth kids unlimited free time when affordable options for constructive engagement are limited. YOTM serves as a haven for kids to come and enjoy themselves without having to deal with the daily pressures in their household or community. We offer a non-intimidating welcoming space that gets kids off the streets and gears them on the right path to success. Youth on the Move gives participants opportunities to engage their mind, body, and spirit throughout the day from 8 am – to 6 pm for six weeks every summer. Here at YOTM, young people are introduced to many sports activities: including volleyball, soccer, basketball, football, and baseball. They also have access to academic tutoring and learning to help prevent summer learning loss. We allow participants to pursue creative outlets through arts enrichment and participate in YOTM’s technology program.
